The Importance of Off - Axis Beaming in Jet Models

چکیده

— Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are widely thought to originate from collimated jets of material moving at relativistic velocities. Emission from such a jet should be visible even when viewed from outside the angle of collimation. Using Monte Carlo population synthesis methods and including the effects of this off-axis beaming, we can compare various GRB jet models against the global properties of observed bursts. We explore whether or not the X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) seen by HETE-2 and BeppoSAX can be explained as classical GRBs viewed off-axis, and begin to address the more general question of the importance of off-axis beaming in current burst samples.

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Beaming of relativistic ejecta in GRBs has been postulated by many authors in order to reduce the total GRB energy, thus it is very important to look for the observational evidence of beaming. Rhoads (1999) has pointed out that the dynamics of the blast wave, which is formed when the beamed ejecta sweeping the external medium, will be significantly modified by...

Gamma-ray Burst Beaming: a Universal Configuration with a Standard Energy Reservoir?

We consider a gamma-ray burst (GRB) model based on an anisotropic fireball with an axisymmetric energy distribution of the form ǫ(θ) ∝ θ, and allow for the observer’s viewing direction being at an arbitrary angle θv with respect to the jet axis. This model can reproduce the key features expected from the conventional on-axis uniform jet models, with the novelty that the achromatic break time in...

On-Axis Orphan Afterglows

On axis orphan afterglows are afterglows with no preceding γ-ray emission that arise within the initial GRB jet. This could happen if the GRB and afterglow emission are beamed differently in different wavelengths, as would be the case if the relativistic Lorentz factors varies strongly with angle within GRB jets. We show that the observations of the WFC on BeppoSAX constrain with high certainty...

LDA Experimental Data of Three-Poster Jet Impingement System

During its near-ground hovering phase a Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft creates a complex three-dimensional flow field between jet streams, the airframe surface and the ground. A proper understanding and numerical prediction of this flow is important in the design of such aircraft. In this paper an experimental facility, used to gather validation data suitable for testing C...

Late-time Radio Observations of 68 Type Ibc Supernovae: Strong Constraints on Off-axis Gamma-ray Bursts

We present late-time radio observations of 68 local Type Ibc supernovae, including six events with broad optical absorption lines (“hypernovae”). None of these objects exhibit radio emission attributable to off-axis gamma-ray burst jets spreading into our line-of-sight. Comparison with our afterglow models reveals the following conclusions: (1) Less than ∼ 10% of Type Ibc supernovae are associa...
